Online blackjack is as much a game of luck as it is a game of skill. The goal of blackjack is to get a card score total as close to 21 without going over. If you go over, you bust. If the dealer goes over 21, everyone at the table who is still in the game wins.
The dealer has to keep drawing cards until his card score is 17 or higher. Some casinos require that their blackjack dealers hit on soft 17s, which means an ace and one or more smaller cards totaling six overall. A blackjack is a two-card 21, which can only be an ace and a 10-value card. Blackjacks usually pay out more than regular hands.
Whether you are a basic strategy purist or just a casual player, there are a few general strategies to follow. Because you act before the dealer and are not required to hit on anything under a 17, you have more control over the outcome of your hand. There are situations in which you might stay on a hard 12 through 16 if the dealer is showing a two through six.
Because you always assume that any card you can’t see is a 10, you can refuse to act on card combinations over 11 in the hopes that the dealer will bust. If the dealer is showing a seven or higher and you assume that he is hiding a 10, he will stand after you and the other plays act.
As such, it is common practice to draw more cards if you have less than a total of 17 and the dealer shows more than a seven. Never hit on a hard total over 17. Your chances of busting if you hit a hard total over 17 will be much greater than your chances of drawing a small card that can improve your hand.
